Marquette, MIMarch 31, 2026 – Officials in the Negaunee Public School District are currently managing an extraordinary amount of weather-related cancellation days for the year.

District Superintendent Andy Skewis shared an update with Mark & Walt in the Morning.

Skewis said there have been 13 snow days so far this year, which significantly exceeds the usual amount in an average year.  He also acknowledged that as the month of March is drawing to a close, there is still a high possibility for more.

He explained that the District is excused six of those days per year, and the State Department of Education can grant waivers for three more, leaving four more to contend with this year.

Skewis said he has joined with Superintendents of other area schools and drafted a letter that was sent to state legislators and education officials making the case that the remaining days should also be excused due to the extraordinary weather that has hit the region over the winter.

He added that there has been no reply so far from state legislators, so the Negaunee schools are moving forward with the year and planning accordingly for multiple possible scenarios.
