Marquette, MIFebruary 12, 2021The Marquette County Solid Waste Management Authority is working to get the word out to residents to not throw away batteries with their other household waste.

MCSWMA Director of Operations Brad Austin spoke about the particular dangers of lithium ion batteries when they are improperly disposed of with Mark & Walt in the Morning today.

Austin said those types of batteries caused of a small fire at the county landfill earlier this month when a bag of waste caught fire when it was run over by the landfill’s heavy equipment.

He explained that the batteries can be found in many common household items including cell phones, laptops, e-cigarettes, as well as toys and smoke alarms.

Austin said that there are safe and environmentally friendly options for battery disposal, and you can find out more by visiting recycle906.com.
