MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Beginning today, teenage drivers in Michigan who are on their level 1 or level 2 licenses are prohibited from talking on cell phones while they drive.
Those caught talking and driving could face a civil infraction.
Sponsors say the bill will make the roads safer. Others have said roads will be even safer if all drivers were prohibited from talking on cell phones while driving, although those proposals have gone nowhere in the legislature.
This new law will allow police to issue a civil infraction to teens who are in violation of the new law which will is being called Kelsey’s Law, named after 17-year old Kelsey Raffaele of Sault Ste. Marie, who died in a crash while she was using a cell phone.
