MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – One of the most contentious issues to hit the State Capitol in years, becomes law in Michigan today.
The so-called “right to work” law prohibits labor agreements that require employees to pay either union dues or fees to labor unions. The bill was signed into law by Governor Rick Snyder in December but the legislature did not have enough votes at the time to give the bill “immediate effect.”
As a result, it’s effective date is automatically put at three months after the last day of the legislature, meaning today.
Supporters say the law is designed to attract more business to the state. Many opponents say the Republican-sponsored measure is part of a scheme to break unions, and their ability to raise money.
