MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The Superior Watershed Partnership has finished three restoration projects in the Salmon Trout River watershed in northern Marquette County.
These projects and two additional projects that will be completed later this year, were funded by the Fish Passage Program of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The total grant to implement these projects was $220,000.
The projects will restore over 5 miles of stream habitat for native brook trout that has been fragmented by barriers created by road crossings, and prevent over 80 tons of sediment from reaching the river from unimproved roads.
The Salmon Trout River watershed covers a 49.5 square mile area and is home to the only known naturally reproducing population of the native coaster brook trout on Lake Superior’s south shore. Over the last decade the SWP has installed over 20 restoration projects valued at over $2 million which have contributed to a 70% increase in the coaster brook trout population.
