Voter turnout up in unofficial count for primary elections

MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The official numbers won’t be released until next week but it appears voter turnout for Michigan’s primary election was up slightly from four years ago.

According to unofficial counts from the Secretary of State’s office, 1,498,100 voters cast ballots Tuesday. That’s 20.4 percent of the 7,334,233 registered voters in Michigan.

During the same election cycle in 2008, 18.78 percent of registered voters cast ballots.  However, this year’s total is down from 2010, when nearly 23-percent of registered voters helped Rick Snyder win the Republican nomination for Governor.
