A legislative committee is considering a resolution today seeking federal assistance following the Duck Lake wildfire in the Upper Peninsula.  The Duck Lake fire in Luce County began May 24th following a lighting strike. As of June 6, the wildfire has covered 21,112 acres and destroyed 49 cabins and homes, including a motel and store, 23 garages, 38 sheds, and 26 campers.  It’s the third largest forest fire in state history, according to officials.  The governor declared a state of disaster in Luce and Schoolcraft counties late last month.  The resolution under consideration says federal assistance is necessary to supplement state efforts and resources, and it urges the President to declare a major disaster or emergency for areas impacted by the fire.

Chippewa County authorities are reporting the arrest of a man they say intentionally set a grass fire earlier this year.  The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department says they arrested Kyle Maleport of Sault Ste. Marie for the setting of the fire in Bruce Township in April.  The fire consumed approximately 40 acres, destroyed a seasonal home, 2 sheds and a vehicle.  No injuries were reported.
