Marquette, MIMarch 11, 2025The Center for Native American Studies at Northern Michigan University is presenting a free screening this week of the Oscar-nominated documentary film “Sugarcane” on Campus.

Dr. April Lindala, Professor of Native American Studies at NMU, spoke about the screening with Mark & Walt in the Morning.

Lindala, who teaches the History of Indian Boarding School Education at the university, says the film tells the story of a community addressing intergenerational traumas related to Indian Residential Schools and their impacts on the indigenous peoples within that community.

She explained that the film is rated ‘R’ and is intended for mature audiences because it tackles very serious topics and shares stories that can be difficult to hear. But, she adds, the stories need to be told to help with healing and fully learning our history.

The film is being shown free of charge this Wednesday, March 12th, at 6:00pm in Jamrich Hall 1100 and is open to the public.
