Marquette, MIAugust 7, 2024 – The stages are set for the November general election after voters made their voices heard in yesterday’s primary in Michigan. In the race to fill the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by the retiring Democrat Senator Debbie Stabenow, it will be Democrat Elissa Slotkin taking on Republican Mike Rogers this fall.

In the Race for the 1st Congressional District, which represents the entire U.P. and portion of Northern Lower Michigan, Incumbent Republican Jack Bergman will face Democrat challenger Callie Barr. Bergman scored an easy victory in his primary race yesterday, and Barr defeated fellow Democrat Bob Lorinser, taking 58 percent of the votes to Lorinser’s 41 percent.

In the 109th District State House race, Incumbent Democrat Jenn Hill will face former TV meteorologist Karl Bohnak on the Republican side. Hill took an overwhelming majority of the Democrat vote over challengers Randy Girard and Margaret Brumm. On the Republican side, Bohnak was the winner over Burt Mason and Melody Wagner.

The field has been set for the race to fill two open seats on the Marquette City Commission this fall after yesterday’s vote. The four top vote getters moving on to the November general election were Cary Gottlieb, Incumbent Commissioner Jermey Ottaway, former Marquette City Manager Bill Vajda and Jim Rankin.

Also in the City of Marquette, voters overwhelmingly approved a millage request to continue services for seniors at the Marquette Senior Center.

In Marquette Township, voters passed two millage requests by large majorities. They cover Township Fire Truck and Apparatus Replacement and Supplemental Law Enforcement services provided by the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office.

Voters in the City of Negaunee also approved a proposed City Zoning amendment to revert the zoning of a 5-acre parcel of city-owned property in Old Town back to a Public Area Zoning District. The final vote count was 847 YES to 322 NO.

A series of county-wide millage proposals were passed by Marquette County voters by wide margins. They include funding for programs and services for senior citizens and veterans, and for continued operation of the Marquette County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Unit and the county’s enhanced 9-1-1 service.

Voters in Powell Township, did, however, defeat a request for 1 mill over 5 years for recreational services to township residents. That was by a final tally of 190 N 127 Y.
