Marquette, MI – January 5, 2024 – The lack of snow this winter across the region will continue, at least in the short term, according to Matt Zika with the National Weather Service Marquette office.
Zika explained that while this winter’s low snowfall totals are definitely out of the ordinary, they are not unprecedented.
He said we are in a weather pattern known as an “El Niño”, which is associated with a band of warm ocean water that develops in the central and east-central equatorial Pacific and affects winter weather patterns in the northern hemisphere.
Zika added that the influence of the pattern has resulted in a winter, that at least so far, will continue to have low snow totals.
He also said that this type of weather pattern is not permanent, and should not be considered as “a new normal”, saying that colder temperatures and more seasonal snow amounts are possible as the winter months continue.
