Marquette, MI – April 7, 2026 – A new book entitled “The Feather Wars and the Great Crusade to Save America’s Birds” has been penned by author James McCommons.
McCommons is a professor emeritus from Northern Michigan University where he taught journalism and nature writing for 20 years. This latest work is his third book and it focuses on the wildlife protection movement in the early 20th century and the people and organizations that came together to save America’s birds.
McCommons talked about the book with Mark & Walt in the Morning.
McCommons explained that early Americans assumed that the land’s natural resources were infinite, including its birds, which were hunted for food, game, and fashion in the 19th century. He says the book highlights the start of national wildlife protection efforts and also shows the connection to the Upper Great Lakes and the Marquette area.
