Marquette, MIFebruary 6, 2024 – Our latest monthly update from Upper Peninsula Health Plan takes a closer look at diabetes.

Jonas Hamren, UPHP Clinical Coordinator, spoke about the disease with Mark & Walt in the Morning.

Hamren talked about how common it is, saying that there are 38.4 million people or over 11% of the population in the United States that have diabetes, and in Michigan, about 10% of the population has it.

He explained that there are two main types of diabetes; type 1 and type 2. Type 1 is a chronic condition where the pancreas makes little to no insulin and usually appears during childhood or adolescence.

Type 2 is due to a problem in the way the body regulates and uses sugar as fuel, adding it used to be known as adult-onset diabetes, but both types can begin during childhood and adulthood.

Hamren said effective diabetic care is based on regular visits with one’s health care provider and people should discuss blood sugar control to manage their blood sugar and decide on a management plan together, if needed.
