Marquette, MIMay 2, 2023 – A Winter Storm Warning continues for the north-central and western Upper Peninsula from Alger to Gogebic Counties.

The National Weather Service Office in Negaunee Township has extended the storm warning until 2:00pm for today as heavy, wet snow, and high winds will continue this morning and then diminish through the day.

Multiple school districts in Marquette and Alger and Counties have closed today due to hazardous roads and continuing stormy conditions. Negaunee, Ishpeming and the NICE Community Schools have all gone to virtual online learning days today. Schools in Baraga County are running on 2-hour delays this morning.

Northern Michigan University is open today, but as weather and road conditions continue to be challenging, they are encouraging students and staff who cannot make it to campus to communicate with the appropriate people as soon as possible.  Faculty members are also encouraged to make alternative arrangements for students who are unable to access any final exams this week due to the weather.

Travel will be very difficult in some areas this morning, especially in western Alger, Marquette and Baraga counties. Snow still collecting on trees and power lines, gusty winds could continue to break tree branches, leading to more power outages. The snow will also be difficult to move.

Several thousand electric customers are currently without power in Marquette County and the central U.P. Crews are working to restore the power as soon as possible.  Officials say if you come across a downed power line, do no touch it and report it to the utility company as soon as possible.
