Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball Falls at Buzzer 50-48 to the Escanaba Eskymos on Sunny 101.9

Escanaba, MIDecember 10, 2019 – The Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball team was back in action against the Escanaba Eskymos, and lost 50-48 at the buzzer after holding a double digit lead. Jesse Anderson had the call from Escanaba on Sunny 101.9.

1st Half:

The Eskymos started off strong behind the scoring of Nicole Kamin and Madison Monkevich, and led 6-0 early. Negaunee couldn’t crack the zone defense of Escanaba, and that led to multiple turnovers. The Miners finally got on the board with four minutes left in the first quarter after a basket by Alyssa Hill.  After a shaky start, Negaunee began to get things going from 3-point shots by Chloe Norman and Lilly Nelson to take an 8-6 lead. Hill once again showed her height inside with a lay-up, and the Miners ended the quarter on a 10-0 run. Negaunee led Escanaba 10-6 after the opening quarter of play.

Hill continued to eat up Escanaba’s 1-3-1 zone defense, as she scored the first five points of the second quarter. Negaunee’s defense picked up, as the Eskymos were having a tough time shooting the basketball. A steal and fast break lay-up by Jillian Skewis extended the Miners’ lead to 17-6, forcing an Escanaba timeout. Escanaba’s Taylor Ray went on a personal 5-0 run of her own, and the deficit was cut to only three points. Negaunee started reverting to its play in the beginning minutes of the game with errant passes and unforced turnovers. After a pair of free throws from the Eskymos made the score 17-16, Nelson hit two consecutive 3-pointers to bounce the lead back up to seven points. The Miners responded from an Escanaba and-one in the final minute of the first half with two free throws from Hill. Negaunee held on to a six-point halftime lead after a messy second quarter.

2nd Half:

The action was fast to start the third quarter, as the Miners quickly extended its lead to 34-24 with four minutes remaining. Both teams began to go back and forth, as Negaunee held on to a 36-29 advantage. The Miners continued to feed Hill down low with a lay-up to extended the lead back up to nine points. Ray countered with two free throws to make the score 38-31 in favor of Negaunee. Even though the Eskymos’ zone was problematic at times for Negaunee, they began to carve it up with great looks inside. Lay-ups by Norman and Morgan Carlson gave the Miners an 11-point edge and that is how the third quarter would end.

Escanaba started the fourth quarter off strong behind a Ray 3-pointer and a lay-up from Kamin. The Miners were forced to call timeout after the Eskymos’ run, but still held a 44-39 lead. Both teams traded baskets with three minutes left, and Negaunee led 46-41. After a Miners’ miss, Kamin drove down the lane with a floater and cut the lead to just three points. On the other end, Negaunee fed it inside to Hill where she drew a foul and made one free throw to put them up 47-43 with two minutes remaining. The Miners countered with a couple of huge defensive stops, and a free throw from Norman put Negaunee up by five with one minute left. Kamin came back down on the other end with a 3-pointer to make the score 48-46. Escanaba’s Mari Bink stole the inbounds pass and dished it to Ray for the lay-up to tie the game at 48-48 with 44 seconds left. Negaunee had the chance to take back the lead, but Norman’s shot was no good and the Eskymos had its chance to win it with 20 seconds left. After a missed shot, Bink corralled the rebound and got it to Kamin for the final shot. The Grand Valley State commit drove in and knocked down the floater at the buzzer for the win. The Eskymos came back from an 11-point deficit to defeat Negaunee 50-48 in a thriller. Negaunee drops to 2-1 on the season after the tough loss.
