The Miners won the tip and Jay Lori scored the first points of the game, to give them a 2-0 lead early on against Kingsford. The Flivers answered back quickly as senior Joe Hofer hit a three from the corner to give Kingsford the lead. With just over two minutes left in the first quarter the scored was tied at seven, but the Miners were able to capture a 12-10 lead going into the second quarter on a Dre Tuominen two-pointer.
A very sloppy first few minutes of the second had the Miners and Flivvers battling back and forth, resulting in the Miners trailing 17-16, but Negaunee would use a big surge to end the quarter with seven unanswered points. Jay Lori was an absolute man in the first half, finishing with 16 points, including a huge three pointer to spark the Miners end-of-half run. Negaunee ended the first half of the game in the lead 23-17 over Kingsford.
Negaunee came out of the gate in the second half with a quick bucket from Jay Lori, scoring two of his game-high 22 points on a great post move. The Miners were able to maintain their lead over the Flivvers during the first minutes of the third quarter, and lead 27-21. Kingsford was able to string together a couple of offensive possessions as Nick Glodowski dropped in a couple easy buckets to cut the Miners lead to just two points near the end of the third. Negaunee would get the last say in the third, however, as Dre Tuominen hit a long two-pointer near the end of the quarter, giving the Miners the 32-28 lead.
Negaunee started off the quarter by scoring seven straight points to open up a double-digit lead, and never looked back. Dylan Tasson hit a huge three pointer to spark the Miners attack, and the rest of the fourth was all Negaunee. Dre Tuominen, who struggled for much of the first half shooting, took over the game en route to a quarter that saw the Miners outscore the Flivvers 19-6. Jay Lori continued to dominate on the boards and around the rim, finishing with a double-double, and using his free-throws to stave off any hope of a Kingsford comeback. Every time Kingsford put in a bucket, the Miners would put in two. Despite guard Ben Luke and forward Dylan Tasson fouling out, the Miners were able to get some key defensive stops from junior guard Grant Johnson, who played a great defensive game for the Miners. The Negaunee Miners would cruise to a 17 point win over the Kingsford Flivvers on this night in Negaunee, 51-34.
Jay Lori lead the way for the Miners, netting himself an impressive 22 points and 12 rebounds, he’s the first Miner to hit the 20-point plateau this season. Sophomore guard Dre Tuominen hit double digits for the second consecutive game, finishing with 13. He was also in on a lot of hustle plays that resulted in some great assists and steals. Junior forward Dylan Tasson scored eight points for the second consecutive game, in the same exact fashion: two 3-pointers and a layup. He was part of a great tandem of rebounding alongside Jay Lori as well. Senior wing-man Rob Loy played excellent defense, as Kingsford struggled most of the night to get the ball into the lane effectively; Rob would finish the game with five points.
