The Eskimos won the tip and scored on a quick three point shot from Samuel Molnar in the first few seconds of the game to take the lead, a theme that was present throughout.  Jay Lori scored the first points of the season on a free-throw and got the Miners on the board.  The Miners battled and took the lead 9-8 on a Dre Tuominen three-pointer as the Miners continued to figure out how to play with a new lineup sans Tyler Jandron & Eric Lori.  Both teams played a competitive first quarter, but the Miners inched out to lead 15-13 at the end of one.

Samuel Molnar continued to keep the Eskimos in the ball game and give them the lead, hitting three after three.  The second quarter continued to be competitive  and both teams were tied 19-19 with five minutes left.  Molnar was able to push the Eskimo lead to three by the end of the second quarter, and almost pushed it to six as he hit a three-quarter-court shot just after the buzzer.

Escanaba scored first in the third quarter to lead 31-26 against this young Miners team. Rob Loy scored first in the third quarter for the Miners with a big three pointer to bring the Miners within two.  While he was certainly the star of the night, it wasn’t all Sammy Molnar who was draining shots for Escanaba.  Tyler Skufca added in a pair of his own, and senior Christopher Rose added in one as well, as the Eskimos ended the third quarter leading 42-37.

Despite trailing by as much as seven points in the third quarter, the young Miners team battled back hard.  They were first to put points on the board in the fourth quarter, and knocked the Eskimo’s lead down to three points, 42-39.  Dre Tuominen was determined to have a memorable Miners debut, and was able to tie the game at 42 with a few free-throws.  They then tied the game with three minutes left in the quarter and on the next possession took the lead 49-47 over the Eskimos!  With 10 seconds left in the game was tied at 50, when Dre Tuominen tried to find a seam in the Eskimo zone, but turned the ball over.  A controversial call gave Escanaba two free-throws, and a technical foul assessed to coach Dan Waterman gave them two more and the ball with 0.6 seconds left.  Esky sank two of the four and sealed the victory, defeating the Miners 52-50 at home.

The Miners were led tonight by Dre Tuominen’s 16 points (Nine from the free-throw line!), and junior forward Jay Lori tossed in 15 of his own.  The Miners only had four players get in the score-book as junior Dylan Tasson tossed in 10, while Rob Loy rounded it all out with eight.

Join Carl Leander Johnson, the voice of the Negaunee Miners and Jesse Anderson next Tuesday, December 16th, 2014 as the Negaunee Miners Boys Basketball team host the Kingsford Flivers.  Pre-game will start around 7:00pm, with the game to follow at 7:30pm on Sunny.FM.
