Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – U.S. Congressman Dan Benishek has joined a bipartisan coalition of lawmakers asking the U.S. Army to explain the proposed closure of ROTC programs around the country, including the one at Northern Michigan University in Marquette.

Benishek says he is shocked by the proposed closure of NMU’s ROTC program and will work closely with the university to get an explanation.

The program, which has been at NMU for 44 years, was targeted for closure in May of 2015 earlier this month.

It is one of 13 ROTC programs slated for closing and the only one in Michigan.

Benishek and the other representatives want the Army to consider looking more closely at each of the programs before making a final decision.

He also says he would like a better understanding of the process that led to the decision.
