Great Lakes Radio NewsMARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News)State Police at the Munising Detachment say one dog was killed and two were injured early yesterday when a dog team competing in the UP200 sled dog race was hit by a pickup truck in Alger County.

The accident happened around 5:40 a.m. on M-28 near the Cherrywood Lodge in Wetmore.

State Police say an eastbound pickup truck, driven by a 65-year-old man from Ontario, Canada, struck the dog team, operated by musher Frank Moe of Bemidji, Minnesota, as it inadvertently crossed onto the highway in front of the pickup.

Witnesses say the driver attempted to slow down and avoid the team and volunteers at the site also tried to stop the dog team, but the accident was unavoidable.

Moe and the driver were both uninjured, and the injured dogs are being treated at the Gwinn-Sawyer Veterinary Clinic. Troopers say the name of the driver of the pickup truck is being withheld, but he had the right of way and was not cited for any traffic violations.
