MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – A 74-year old Upper Peninsula man has been arraigned in the stabbing of a sheriff’s deputy during the Continental Cup Ski Jumping Tournament in Iron Mountain on Sunday.
Andrew Bray of Norway is charged with one count each of assault with intent to murder and carrying a concealed weapon. A preliminary examination is set for February 22.
According to Dickinson County Sheriff Scott Celello, two deputies patrolling the event were walking near the club house when the suspect approached them from behind and stabbed one of the deputies in the upper back. The knife was knocked out of the suspects hand and he was subdued then taken into custody.
The initial investigation revealed that Bray had attended the event to target a deputy but not anyone in particular. The injured deputy was treated at the scene.
Bray is being held at the Dickinson County jail on a $1 million bond.
