Escanaba, MI – March 7, 2023 – The Negaunee Miner Girls went against the West Iron County Wykons for the Regional Semifinals on Tuesday night. Carl Leander Johnson was on the scene for Sunny 101.9.
The Wykons won the tip-off, initiating the start of the game. The Miners were down four with two minutes left in the quarter. Cooper Atkins made a big play that closed the gap to two points for the Miners. The Miners went into the second quarter down by two.

The Miners took their first lead of he night early in the second quarter. The Wykons didn’t let down and made it a one point game. It was a tough game offensively for both teams. The score was 14-12 going into the second half.

The Miners got the ball to start the second half, and with a nice pass from Ella Mason, Cooper Atkins scored a basket to tie up the game. Both teams regained their scoring momentum and displayed a great offensive effort. Negaunee found the opportunity to steal the ball and scored a basket at the opposite end of the court. The Miners were shooting very well and forced the Wykons to call a timeout. Negaunee took a one point lead at the end of the quarter.

Grace Nardi kicked off the fourth quarter with her first field goal of the night, boosting the teams lead. Negaunee continued to take advantage of their momentum and widened their lead by eight. Ella Mason hit a three that helped her reach double digits. With only three minutes remaining in the quarter, the Miners took an 11 point lead. The Miners managed to maintain their lead until the end of the game, securing a well-deserved victory.
