Miners Win Big, Defeat Patriots 68-37

Negaunee, MIJanuary 21st, 2022 – The Negaunee Miners girls basketball team continued their season this afternoon, when they hosted the Westwood Patriots. The second match up between the two schools this season. The game was broadcasted on Sunny 101.9.

1Q: The Patriots opened up the game with a Natalie Prophet bucket, as Negaunee and Ella Mason connected to tie the game at two. Westwood had a few open shots to start the game, but the buckets couldn’t fall. With just under 6 minutes to play in the quarter, Summer Dudo gave the Miners a 4-2 lead. The next two possessions for the Miners were successful, Emily Gauthier connected for two points, as Ella Mason added two of her own. After Westwood finally got back onto the board, Lilly Nelson buried a three pointer to take a 15-4 lead, but on the next Patriot possession, a three pointer of their own would fall. After a very fast paced, high scoring opening quarter, the Miners led 18 -12 heading into the second.

2Q: Every Miner starter scored a bucket in the first quarter, as the second quarter opened with back to back Summer Dudo buckets. The Miners also earned themselves the bonus in the beginning of the quarter, as Alyssa Hill knocked down two free throws to take the 24-12 lead. After a Miner steal, Cooper Atkins scored a bucket to take the fourteen point lead. The Miners continued to roll, as everything seemed to be clicking offensively as Alyssa Hill scored on back to back possessions to take a 31-13 lead. With just under two minutes to play in the half, Cooper Atkins buried a three pointer to take a 36-13 lead, her 7th point of the quarter. The Miners were able to close out the half with a 37-15 lead.

3Q: The quarter opened with an Emily Gauthier bucket for the Miners, as Summer Dudo scored five points in back to back possessions to take a 44-17 lead. The Prophet sisters from Westwood tried their all to get their team back into the game as Natalie scored 6 straight for the Patriots to cut the deficit to 23. Ella Mason and Alyssa Hill then teamed up to score seven straight points to take the 51-21 lead, the largest lead of the night. The Miners continued to roll through the quarter, as heading into the final quarter, it was the Miners with a 55-24 lead.

4Q: The quarter opened with seven straight points from Natalie Prophet to cut the deficit to 24 but the Miners answered back with straight points of their own, as Alyssa Hill caused a pause in the final minutes, as she scored her 1000th career point for the Miners and was recognized during the contest. After losing by 14 to the Patriots just a month ago, the Miners pounded Westwood by a score of 68-37. Alyssa Hill won the Player of the Game, leading the Miners with 18 points.

The Miners will take a week off before continuing their season on February 1st, when they take on the Gladstone Braves. The ball will tip at 7:15 pm as you can hear the game on Sunny 101.9.
