Negaunee Loses in Rivalry Matchup Against Marquette 53-55 on Sunny 101.9

Negaunee, MI – December 30th, 2021 – The Negaunee Miners Boy’s Basketball team lost in an instant classic rivalry game against Marquette 53-55. Luke Ghiardi had the call live from Negaunee on Sunny 101.9.

1st Quarter:

The Redmen came out quickly and without time for Negaunee to blink, the Miners trailed 0-5. Gavin Downey stepped out of bounds with the ball giving the ball back to Marquette. The Miners got their first points when Gavin Jacobson went to the line and drained both free throws. It was a foul fest in the first quarter as Marquette’s Axel Vermaat quickly got two fouls and John Weber subbed in for him. Ty Jacobson continued to get buckets for Negaunee as he got the hook shot to go. Jacobson hit a three to cut the Miners’ deficit to 10-12. Wyatt Lakenen fouled Mason Sager, Sager would go on to make free throws, giving the Miners their first lead of the night.

End of 1st: Negaunee 16, Marquette 15

2nd Quarter:

The Miners didn’t hold back to start the second quarter as Gavin Downey drained a three to extend Negaunee’s lead. Jordan Demay fouled Jace Turri, Turri would go 1/2 from the line. Mason Sager got fouled and he went perfect from the line for the Miners. It was a free throw party for Negaunee as Gavin Jacobson went to the line, he made the first but missed the second. The Miners’ lead got cut to 22-24 when Jack Quinnell went 1/2 from the charity stripe. Downey would hit a shot from beyond the arc, continuing the hot shooting night for Negaunee. Marquette cut the lead to 27-30 when John Weber sank a three to end the half.

End of 2nd: Negaunee 30, Marquette 27

3rd Quarter:

Ty Jacobson got his tenth point of the night with a nice jump shot. The Miners opened with a 5-0 run as Jacobson hit another three. The threes continued to fall as Mason Sager drained a shot from beyond the arc, extending the lead to 6. Gavin Jacobson got fouled, he went to the line and made the first but not the second. Sager hit another jump shot, this time bringing the lead up to 9. Jordan Demay got fouled, got the ball back and got the bucket. Jonas Bicik continued his dominance when he got his 17th point of the night. To endthe quarter Sager got a pair of free throws to give the Miners more cushion.

End of 3rd Quarter: Negaunee 48, Marquette 37

4th Quarter:

Demay trimmed the Miners’ lead when he got the right landed layup to go. Bicik couldn’t be stopped as he got his 21st point of the game, the Redmen were gaining momentum and making their way back into the game. Mason Sager had a chance to end Marquette’s comeback with a layup but Bicik’s contest ledto a miss. The Miners couldn’t get the ball across half court and were called for the ten second call. Bicik got yet another bucket and the Redmen only trailed by 4. Demay hit a three and all of a sudden the game was tied up 51-51. Jacobson missed the shot and Vermaat got the board but there was a tie up and a jumpball was called, the Miners retained possession. With 60 seconds left, David Eberhard drained both free throws, Marquette led 53-51. Eberhard was fouled again and got another pair of free throws. Brody Bell brought the Miners back within two with his pair of charity stripe shots. Mason Sager put up a three to take the lead but was blocked by Demay. Demay went to the line after being fouled and missed his free throw. A final prayer shot was put up by the Miners but it went over the backboard as time expired.

Final Score: Negaunee Miners 53, Marquette Redmen 55
