Michigan State Police reports of a methamphetamine  lab being stopped near the Mackinac Bridge this morning.  A trooper from the St. Ignace Post stopped a vehicle on I-75 near the tolls of the Mackinac Bridge for having a cracked windshield.  After being questioned about an odor of burnt marijuana the occupants, a 29 year old male driver and 21 year old female passenger,  said the odor came from the synthetic marijuana they smoked.  A search of the vehicle resulted in finding several packets of meth along with syringes.  Also found were many of the chemicals used in the manufacturing of meth and bottles with a mixture that indicated the occupants were in the process of manufacturing the drug inside the vehicle.  Both of the occupants are lodged in the Mackinac County Jail for possession, delivery, and manufacturing of methamphetamine.  No names have been released as of this time.

The man who was shot while breaking into a Marquette home appeared in court for first degree home invasion charges yesterday.  On the morning of May 22nd, Jesse Homa of Sayner, Wisconsin allegedly entered a mobile home.  When Homa knocked down the back door of the home in question, the owner shot him twice in the leg with a pistol.  Homa was bound over to circuit court and faces a max penalty of 20 years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

The price of gasoline in Michigan continues to drop.  State motorists are paying an average three-dollars-62 cents per gallon, down 10 cents from last week and down by 53 cents compared to a year ago, according to Triple A Michigan.  Of the cities it surveys, the auto club says the lowest prices in the state are in the Flint area at about three-dollars-51 cents.  The highest are in the Marquette area at nearly three-dollars-76-cents a gallon.

State lawmakers today will take another stab at cracking down on a new synthetic drug, sometimes called K-2 spice or synthetic marijuana. It’s a substance that produces a high, but is also available at some convenience stores in the state.  Effects from the drug have been tied to recent criminal activity in Michigan, including the baseball bat murder of a grandmother in Farmington Hills.  Earlier efforts to ban the substance have failed, since manufacturers keep making minor changes to the chemical makeup, allowing it to evade the law.  Legislation in committee today would give the state more authority to simply remove from store shelves any so called “designer drug,” if the state sees it as posing an imminent threat in Michigan.  It also allows for penalties of up to three months in jail and/or five thousand dollars in fines for selling the product, even if it had been slightly altered in an attempt to evade the law.
