NMU President Chris Olsen Discusses EAN Broadband Network Sale

Marquette, MIAugust 26, 2026Northern Michigan University is selling it’s Educational Access Network, or EAN, broadband service to an Upper Michigan-based internet company.

The NMU Board of Trustees approved the sale this week for $21 million to Michigan Broadband Services.

Northern Michigan University President, Dr. Chris Olsen, spoke about the sale with Mark & Walt in the Morning.

Olsen said the university says the sale to the Carney-based company is pending final approval by the FCC, but is expected to be completed later this fall.

He outlined some of the reasons for the sale and how it fits into the future of NMU during some possible difficult financial times ahead.

Northern says they will be working with the company to ensure a smooth transition for existing EAN customers, including NMU students and employees.
