NEWS UPDATE FOR 3/19/12

Authorities in the Copper Country are continuing their investigation into a weekend single-vehicle rollover accident.  The Houghton County Sheriff’s Department says the accident happened around 1:45 am on Saturday on Main Street in Dollar Bay.  The driver, an unidentified 30-year-old Hancock man was injured when his northbound vehicle left the roadway near Dogwood Avenue, rolled over and struck a tree.  The driver was taken to Portage Health in Hancock and later transferred to Marquette General Hospital.  The driver’s condition is unknown at this time.

State Police and Lac Vieux Desert Tribal Police report a car-bicycle accident in the Western U-P Saturday afternoon that injured a 10-year-old girl.  The accident happened around 3:30-pm Central time Saturday on US-45 and Rifle Road in Watersmeet when the girl was struck by a Ford Focus.  The girl, whose name has not been released, was hospitalized and her condition is not known.  The investigation into the accident is continuing.

Weight restrictions have been lifted on all state trunkline highways south of and including US-2 at St. Ignace west to the Michigan/Wisconsin border at Iron Mountain. State trunkline highways typically carry M, I, or US designations. On routes designated as “all-season”, there is no reduction in legal axle weights. On routes designated as “seasonal”, there is a posted weight reduction of 25 percent for rigid pavements and 35 percent for flexible pavements. All extended permits are valid for oversize loads in the weight-restricted area on the restricted routes.

The Department of Natural Resources’ Eastern and Western Upper Peninsula Citizens’ Advisory Councils are meeting tonight in Marquette. The meeting will be from 6 to 9 in the Huron and Erie rooms at the Bottum University Center at N-M-U. The two advisory councils meet jointly once each year to discuss items pertaining to the Upper Peninsula. The groups are designed to advise the D-N-R on regional programs and policies.
