Houghton, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Researchers at Michigan Tech in Houghton say the number of wolves at Isle Royale National Park is at an unprecedented low.

The Annual MTU Winter Study found only three wolves appear to remain at the island park on Lake Superior.

The number marks a sharp decline from nine wolves observed last winter.

Along with the three resident wolves, scientists estimated 1,250 moose on the island.

Researchers say the growing gap between the predator and prey populations is a trend they have tracked over the past four years.
