MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – A new independent study by the Center For Rural Strategies has found that Marquette County has experienced a so-called “brain gain” in the last 40 years.
The study, which looked at census records since 1970, found Marquette County joined the rest of the country in what has been a massive increase in the number of adults who have earned college degrees.
In 1970, 10.7 percent of those over 25 years of age had college degrees in Marquette County. By 2010, 29.7 percent of adults here had completed college. The percentage of adults with college degrees in Marquette County was greater than the national average of 27.9 percent in 2010.
The college-educated rate in the county was greater than the Michigan average of 25 percent. The survey found that Marquette County has also kept up with national trends involving rural residents increasing their education to remain competitive in the job market.
According to the survey, since 1970, rural people have responded to the demand for increased job skills by the increasing their post secondary education.
