Marquette City Police have released the names of the suspects and the victim of an early-morning stabbing in the city.  Police arrested 19-year-olds Taylor Shantel-Julann Mitchell and Danny Lee Weymouth, both from Ishpeming on felonious assault charges connected to the stabbing of 19-year-old Zachary Skinner of Marquette. The incident was reported just before 12:30 yesterday morning at 520 Wright Street.  Police say Skinner got into a fight with Weymouth and shortly after Mitchell, Weymouth’s girlfriend jumped into the fight.  Skinner then told police the two assaulted him with Mitchell allegedly stabbing him once in the head, leg and back.  Skinner was taken to MGH where he was treated and later released.  The investigation is continuing and the case is under review for possible additional charges by the Marquette County Prosecutor.

The trial for two Upper Peninsula men linked to more than 4,000 pounds of explosives is continuing today in Federal court in Marquette.  65-year old John Lechner of Sault Ste. Marie is charged with transporting, distributing and improperly storing the explosives.  53-year old Ken Kassab of Brimley is charged with transporting explosive materials and possessing explosives as a convicted felon.  Both men initially pleaded guilty but later withdrew their pleas.  Lechner was arrested last September after federal and local authorities found four-thousand-150 pounds of ammonium nitrate/fuel oil mix along with explosive boosters, detonating cords and blasting caps at the home of his mother in Dafter.  He faces a maximum of 10 years in prison if convicted.

At last report, crews were working to have all power operationally restored this afternoon or evening.

Marquette County’s Peninsula Bank has named a new President.  The bank’s board of directors has selected Kim Van Osdol to succeed retiring President Bill Stream. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from NMU and is a graduate of the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University.  Stream is retiring after a 33-year career with Peninsula Bank. The Department of Natural Resources says snowmobile and ORV trail riders will soon notice a reduction in the types of trail markings along the state’s designated motorized trail system. The DNR has implemented the changes to improve safety and provide consistent guidance to the more than 90 non-profit organizations that maintain the trails. Changes include the elimination of 10 workgroup-selected snowmobile signs, the addition of five new snowmobile signs, plus guidelines for placement, and a reduction in the size of regulatory signs in the ORV program to make them consistent with snowmobile signage already implemented in 2011. The changes also include replacing ORV trail markers with new, highly visible, yellow markers. Installation will be phased in over the next several years.
