Marquette, MI – March 17, 2026 – Snow removal and cleanup efforts are underway this morning after a massive blizzard that brought heavy snowfall and high winds across much of Upper Michigan. The National Weather Service Office in Negaunee Township says posted Blizzard Warnings expired overnight across the region, and weather conditions will slowly be improving through the day today from west to east. The residuals of the storm, however, have closed down many schools, government offices, businesses, events and activities today.
State Police and Emergency Management personnel say that travel will continue to be treacherous in some outlying areas as the widespread high winds and heavy snowfall over the last few days has resulted in major drifting in many areas. Agencies are asking people to try to stay off of the side roads and out of parking areas if at all possible to allow crews to do their cleanup jobs as needed.
Multiple schools are closed today, including Northern Michigan University, Bay College’s Escanaba and Iron Mountain campuses and others, and several community and government agencies are not open with services and events canceled. If you have scheduled appointments today, it is best to try to reach out and check ahead to see if it is still on or to reschedule.
Total accumulations of this blizzard are being reported up to 4 feet in the traditional snow belt areas across Upper Michigan. Officials say some lake effect snow showers will continue today, mainly in Alger County, with gusty winds strongest near the Lake Superior shoreline. Conditions will continue to improve throughout the rest of the week with some sunny skies and warmer temps moving in by the end of the week.
