Marquette, MI – March 12, 2024 – On our latest Active Physical Therapy update, we hear about preventing and mitigating fall risk.
Makela explained that falling is a real concern as we age and falls are the leading cause of injury and injury related deaths in people over the age of 65 in the United States.
She outlined the three major balance systems that help prevent us from falling, which are our vision, inner ear, and the receptors in our legs and feet that help us feel where we are on the ground.
Makela said that maintaining a good routine of both strengthening and cardiovascular exercise to keep your muscles strong and circulation active will help with preventing falls.
She added that understanding medication side effects that may affect your balance is important as is discussing them with your doctor.
Makela also stressed the importance of getting restorative sleep. Feeling unrested and tired can heighten any fall risk factors. And she encouraged people to consider physical therapy so therapists can assess and treat your unique fall risks.
