Marquette, MI – May 5, 2023- Northern Michigan University has adopted the Okanagan Charter, an international charter providing a framework for becoming a “health and wellbeing promoting” campus.

Abigail Wyche, Assistant Vice President for Campus Wellbeing at NMU, spoke about the charter and how it is being adopted at the university.

Wyche explained that the Okanagan Charter grew out of the 2015 International Conference on Health Promoting Universities and Colleges and is intended to encourage action towards the creation of health promoting universities and colleges.

NMU is one of 17 health promoting universities and colleges in the U.S., is one of two in Michigan and the only one in the Upper Peninsula, to adopt the Okanagan Charter.

She added that it is a public commitment and an accountability tool for taking transformative action under a principled framework.
