Marquette, MIMarch 7, 2023 – March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and Upper Peninsula Health Plan is getting the word out about the importance of early detection through screening.

Renee Anderton, UPHP Clinical Coordinator, spoke about colorectal cancer screening with Mark & Walt in the Morning.

Anderton explained what colorectal cancer is and that it is preventable, detectable and if found early, treatable.

She added that UPHP is encouraging individuals 45 and older who are due for, or have put off, recommended cancer screenings to contact their primary care physician as soon as possible to schedule this important care.

Anderton outlined some of the risk factors for colorectal cancer as well as some of the main screening options, adding that it’s important to not wait for symptoms to be checked.

She added that precancerous polyps and colorectal cancer do not always cause symptoms, especially early on, and screening helps find it early, when treatment can be very effective.
