Marquette, MINovember 2, 2022Upper Peninsula Health Plan and the Upper Peninsula Health Group are collaborating on the SmartRx Campaign to promote smart antibiotic use as communities begin to navigate through cold and flu season.

Fred Stover, UPHP Clinical Coordinator-Quality Management, spoke about the campaign this week with Mark & Walt in the Morning.

Stover said that the effort is intended to educate the community about appropriate antibiotic use as well as assist with providing supportive treatment options for viral illnesses and to make sure that everyone is antibiotic aware.

He explained when a person has a viral infection, such as cold, flu or even COVID-19, antibiotics are not able to treat those illnesses and antibiotics tend to be taken too often for viruses that they aren’t able to treat which can cause issues like antibiotic resistance.

Stover said that for more information and resources see the CDC’s Antibiotic Awareness Website.

UPHP Members can contact Clinical Services at 906-226-1907 for more information or to get connected to resources.
