Ishpeming, MI – February 15, 2019 – The Negaunee Miners Varsity Girls Basketball team fell to the Westwood Patriots (53-40) tonight on 101.9 Sunny FM. The Miners looked good early in the first half, but the Patriots claimed the lead and did not let go from the second quarter on.
Negaunee started with a 4-0 run early in the first quarter to get things going. The Patriots quickly tied it up, and it was a game of give and take for much of the quarter.
Two Hannah Voskuhl free throws gave Negaunee the lead again. Westwood answered to tie it back up at 6-6.
Chloe Norman shot one for two at the line to help improve the Negaunee lead to 10-6 going into the second quarter.
Westwood jumped out front early in the second quarter, taking a 19-13 lead over the Miners at one point. Negaunee stayed within striking distance though, and a huge MacKenzie Karki triple helped cut the Patriots’ lead to one.
A late scoring run for the Patriots reversed much of the Miners’ work and extended Westwood’s lead back out to 24-18 going into the half.
Westwood again controlled play early in the second half, leading by as much as nine points in the third quarter. Westwood’s defense made it difficult for the Miners to gain a decent foothold offensively in spite of a great effort. Inversely, Negaunee struggled to shut down Westwood’s offensive answers.
The Patriots led 40-35 at the top of the fourth quarter and quickly picked up steam towards their 53-40 victory over the Negaunee Miners.
The Miners will be back on home court Tuesday, February 19th against the Marquette Redettes on Sunny FM. The pregame show starts at 6:45 pm, tip off is at 7:15 pm.
