Ishpeming, MI – Thursday, December 20th, 2018 – Your Negaunee Miner girls basketball team traveled the short distance to Ishpeming High School to take on the Hematites, and Jesse Anderson was live on Sunny 101.9FM to broadcast all the action to you live! The Miners were having a great start to their season, and they looked to continue to keep the ball rolling against Ishpeming.

The Negaunee Miners broke out to an early lead against the Ishpeming Hematites, and two minutes into the game, they led 3-0. Negaunee kept their run going as they moved ahead of the Hematites 9-0 before the midpoint of the first quarter. Soon, the Miners led by 13-0 with under 3:30 left to play. Ishpeming picked up their defense as the first quarter drew to a close, but there seemed to be no stopping the Negaunee Miners. The Hematites added their first points of the game to the scoreboard with under two minutes to play, but they would still have a lot of ground to make up before the buzzer.

It was a slow start to the second quarter, but the Negaunee Miner girls were determined to take the win from the Ishpeming Hematites. With a score of 20-8 two minutes into the second, the Miners firmly held onto their lead. Despite leading on the scoreboard, Negaunee was being forced to use several of their fouls to restrain the Hematites’ scoring. The Miners had doubled-up the Hematites’ score with two minutes left in the first half of play, but Negaunee would have to hold off the Hematites for two more quarters in order to take home the win.

Leading the Ishpeming Hematites by a hefty margin, the Negaunee Miners were once again the first to put points on the scoreboard in the second half of play. Before the Hematites knew what had happened, the score was 35-15, and nothing seemed to be able to stop Negaunee from putting the ball through the hoop. Even though the Hematites were in a dire situation, they closed the gap to within 20, but soon the Miners jumped out in front with a score of 44-20. It appeared that the Ishpeming Hematite girls had all but given up on the court as Jesse noted that “they seemed really sluggish on the court.”

With only one quarter left to play, the Negaunee Miners had a hefty lead over the Hematites, and they continued to extend that lead as the fourth quarter began. The score was 53-28 with about five minutes left to play, however the Ishpeming gymnasium was astoundingly quiet. The Hematites were never out of the game, but it seemed like they had given up on trying by the end of the third. Negaunee’s lead was 30 points with just over three minutes left in the final quarter, and the Miners would take that lead all the way to the final buzzer.
