Negaunee, MIDecember 28, 2022 – The Negaunee Miners boys basketball team took care of business against the Charlevoix Rayders 57-39 on Wednesday evening.  The second game of a girls/boys doubleheader, Negaunee was able to cap off the daily sweep with the win.

Much like the girls game that started the doubleheader, Negaunee got off to a fast start.  It was 10-2 Miners by the halfway point of the frame, and although the Rayders didn’t let things get away from them, Negaunee stayed firmly in control through the opening eight minutes.

End of First Quarter: Negaunee 22, Charlevoix 11

Negaunee’s Gavin Saunders hit double digit point scoring only seconds in to the second quarter, continuing the fast-paced offense the Miners had established in the opening frame.  He would be joined by two of his teammates before halftime, with Brody Bell and Mason Sager reaching at least ten points and lifting Negaunee to a 19 point lead.

Halftime: Negaunee 38, Charlevoix 19

Charlevoix seemingly began to fade away in the third quarter, as Negaunee’s offense kept pressure on the Rayders.  It wasn’t just one or two Miners doing the heavy lifting though, as several Negaunee players had an impact and led their team to a 25 point lead after three.

End of Third Quarter: Negaunee 50, Charlevoix 25

With a 25 point lead and eight minutes to go in the game, Negaunee shifted their focus to defense in the fourth quarter.  The Miners still found points here and there, but more importantly, they were able to protect the lead and leave the gym with a 57-39 victory.

Final Score: Negaunee 57, Charlevoix 39

The Negaunee Miners Boys will play again tomorrow at 11:00 AM when they host Boyne City at Lakeview Gym.  Carl Leander Johnson will have the broadcast on Sunny 101.9 and online at sunny.fm.
