Negaunee, MI – December 28, 2022 – The Negaunee Miners girls basketball team won the first game of a girls/boys doubleheader against the Charlevoix Rayders 59-21 on Wednesday afternoon at Lakeview Memorial Gym. The Miners, who improve their record to 5-4 with the victory, were led by Ella Mason and Cooper Atkins offensively.
Negaunee opened the scoring early as Ella Mason was fouled on a three point attempt shortly after the tip, and hit two out of three free throws to put the Miners ahead 2-0. Mason would continue to make her impact felt, scoring 10 points in the first 5 minutes and accounting for all 15 of Negaunee’s points in the first quarter.
End of First Quarter: Negaunee 15, Charlevoix 5
Cooper Atkins was the first Miners player not named Ella Mason to score in the game, making a free throw early in the second frame. Mason didn’t go quiet though, as she hit a mid-range shot from the left side just a few moments later. Atkins would add 4 more points in the quarter, and at halftime, Negaunee led by 15.
Halftime: Negaunee 24, Charlevoix 9
Negaunee maintained their lead in the third quarter in large part due to their strong defense, as Charlevoix didn’t score in the frame until over two minutes had passed. Negaunee didn’t exactly have any scoring woes, dropping 23 points heading into the fourth quarter.
End of Third Quarter: Negaunee 47, Charlevoix 16
The final quarter was more of a formality than anything else, with Negaunee able to extend their lead slightly. Charlevoix did their best to finish the game strong, but it was the Negaunee Miners that wound up on top 59-21.
Final Score: Negaunee 59, Charlevoix 21
