Negaunee, MI – January 14th, 2022 – The Negaunee Miners girls basketball team defeat the Ishpeming Hematites 37-25 and seal their 4th straight win. they improve their record to 7-4 on the season. Carl Leander Johnson had the call live on Sunny 101.9!
1st Quarter: Negaunee opened up quickly as Alyssa Hill wins the tip and ball goes to Madison Smith who drives and scores a layup while drawing a shooting foul. The Miners’ Tessa Standerford pokes the ball away and lands on Smiths hands who drives to the rim to score a layup. The Hematites first points came courtesy of Jenna Maki getting her own offensive rebound and shooting a shot. Hill gets her first points of the game with an easy pass inside the paint and layup for the shot. Lily Nelson had a nice assist to Hill down in the paint for an easy shot. Ishpeming would be able to keep up with the Miners as the quarter ends with Negaunee up 12-10.
End of 1st Quarter: Negaunee Miners 12, Ishpeming Hematites 10
2nd Quarter: The Negaunee Miners came out strong as Hill completes a full court pass to Ella Mason who then passes back to Hill for an open layup. Ella Mason would then go on a little run of her own hitting a 3-pointer and then drive for a tough layup shot bringing their lead to 17-10. Mason would also get a nice drive and shot to end out the first half.
End of 2nd Quarter: Negaunee Miners 19, Ishpeming Hematites 14
3rd Quarter: The Hematites’ Maki comes in quick after the half for a jump shot cutting the Miners’ lead to 3. After Ishpeming cuts the lead to one point, Summer Dudo responds with a clutch 3-pointer bringing the Miners’ lead back up to four. Ishpeming refuses to be put away as they answer blow for blow having key steals and blocks to stop any momentum for the Miners, keeping the score close 26-22 with 1 minute and 40 seconds left in the quarter. Negaunee closes the third period leading Ishpeming by 6 points.
End of 3rd Quarter: Negaunee Miners 28, Ishpeming Hematites 22
4th Quarter: The game slowed down with only 2 points being scored by the Miners in the fourth quarter’s first three minutes. Hill would look to spark some offense by driving into the lane drawing a shooting foul, making only one free throw and bringing the lead up to 9 points with 3 minutes left in the game. After Ishpeming missed two crucial free throws, Cooper Atkins made a great pass assist to Hill under the basket who makes an open layup. Summer Dudo looked to put the Miners into a position to close the game out by stealing the ball passing it to Atkins who would make another pass assist to Hill under the basket. Negaunee would then control the game the rest of the way after taking their lead to double digits and sealing their fourth straight win.
