Negaunee, MI – January 14th, 2022 – The Negaunee Miners defeat the Ishpeming Hematites 43-34 at home. They improve to 5-3 on the season and look to continue their win streak next week. The call was made live on Sunny 101.9!
1st Quarter: Both teams came out weak on offense as both the Miners and Hematites could not score a basket for the games first 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Ishpeming’s junior Aj Prosser broke the scoreless tie by getting the ball under the basket and making the shot. From their, the Hematites went on a 7-1 run taking the clock down to about one minute. Gavin Downey was able steal the ball and drive down the court for an easy fast break layup and gets Negaunee’s first basket of the game. Downey then immediately steals the inbound pass and passes to Gavin Jacobson for the easy shot cutting the lead down to 7-5. Jace Turri would hit a clutch jump shot as the buzzer rang to tie the game at the end of the first quarter.
End of 1st Quarter: Negaunee Miners 7, Ishpeming Hematites 7
2nd Quarter: The Hematites came out with a quick layup and in to take the lead. Ty Jacobson would get on the board making two free throws after a hard drive and shooting foul. Downey would continue his defensive dominance with a couple steals leading to points for the Miners. After Ishpeming tied the game at 11-11, The Negaunee Miners would go on a 16-3 run with T. Jacobson starting off the run with a 3-pointer. Mason Sager also had a nice steal passing it to Gerald Johnson for another 3-pointer. With 14 seconds left, Sager drives, spins, and draws a shooting foul, making both free throws to bring the lead to 13 points heading into the second half.
End of 2nd Quarter: Negaunee Miners 27, Ishpeming Hematites 14
3rd Quarter: A more slow paced third quarter played out with Negaunee edging out Ishpeming 9-6 for the entire period. Instead defense efforts by Brody Bell and Sager would hold the Hematites to those 6 points. Offensively, G. Jacobson would make the third period’s first points with a tough jump shot. Jackson Gladwell made a good read and had a pass assist to Bell driving into the lane for a layup. Overall, a quiet quarter gave Negaunee a good chance to take the game going into the final period.
End of 2nd Quarter: Negaunee Miners 36, Ishpeming Hematites 20
4th Quarter: The Miners came out pretty strong defensively in the last quarter to limit the Hematites to only two points for the first 3 minutes. Ishpeming, however, would not go so quietly as shots from Jayce Kipling, Parker Gauthier, and Prosser would actually get the Hematites back into the game cutting the lead to 9 points with one minute left in the game. Negaunee Miners would not let their win slip away and easily closed out the game winning their 5th game of the season.
