Negaunee Miners Boys Basketball Team beats the Calumet Copper Kings on the Road 42-26 on Sunny 101.9!

Calumet, MIJanuary 10th, 2022 – The Negaunee Miners Boys Basketball team went on the road to take on the Calumet Copper Kings. They were able to handily beat Calumet 42-26 and bring their record to 4-3 for the season. Carl Leander Johnson had the call live on Sunny 101.9!

1st Quarter: Negaunee Miners started the game strong going on a 9-0 run with 7 points going to senior Gerald Johnson. From there it was a back and forth battle to end the first quarter. A key shot came from Gavin Downey with 40 seconds left. He made a 3-pointer to double up the Copper Kings 14-7. The Miners defense was great making Calumet fight for every inch of space inside the 3 point line.

2nd Quarter: Defense always wins games. Negaunee went of full defensive mode in the second period allowing 0 points in the entire quarter. Despite being in foul bonus territory with 7min left in the second quarter, Calumet did not take advantage at the free throw line. Gerald Johnson left the game with an apparent shoulder injury at the start of the quarter. With Johnson out, Gavin Jacobson stepped up with strong offense and defensive plays. The first half would end with Negaunee up 24-7.

3rd Quarter: Calumet got things together to start off the third quarter. Going on a 6-0 run, they were able to cut the Negaunee lead to 11 points. Downey would end the run with a free throw off a shooting foul. The third period would transition to another back and forth battle. Gavin Jacobson had a nice steal and fast break to a layup to continue his performance. Following that play, Brody Bell comes up a with a dribble and jump shot off the corner of the paint to extend the Miners lead to 29-13. The third quarter would end with a Mason Sager 3-point shooting foul, making 2/3 free throws.

4th Quarter: The first two minutes of the quarter began scoreless as both teams struggled on offense. Gavin Jacobson would end the drought with a drive and layup bringing them closer to victory. From there it was a free throw competition between both teams as 9 of the next 14 points came from the line. Negaunee Miners would have little trouble closing out the game to give them another win of the season.
