Negaunee Girls Basketball Pulls Away for 62-48 Win over Iron Mountain on Sunny 101.9

Iron Mountain, MIFebruary 13, 2020 – After a struggle in the first half, the Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball turned it around in the second half for a 62-48 win over Iron Mountain on Thursday night. The Miners are now 13-4 on the year, the regular season is hitting the home stretch. Jesse Anderson had the call from Iron Mountain on Sunny 101.9.

1st Half:

Negaunee’s offense was off to a hot start, taking a 5-0 lead after a 3-pointer from Bree Giotto. Iron Mountain had a counter with a trey from Claire Mongrain to make it 5-3, the Mountaineers were ready for the challenge. The Miners went on a run with another balanced scoring effort early on, a basket from Morgan Carlson, and 3-point shot from Lilly Nelson extended the lead to 14-5. Mongrain had a big first quarter with eight points for the Mountaineers, as her shot from the outside cut the deficit to 14-10. Alyssa Hill thought she had the last points of the quarter with her basket with 10 seconds left, but Maddie Sardina’s shot rolled around and in for the Mountaineers at the buzzer. Negaunee led 16-12 at the end of the first quarter.

End of 1st: Negaunee Miners 16, Iron Mountain Mountaineers 12

The Miners’ continued to scorch the nets, but Mongrain was kept Iron Mountain in the game with 15 points in the first half. Negaunee was handling the Mountaineers’ 1-3-1 zone defense well, putting up 31 points in a half isn’t easy. Hill got it rolling for Negaunee, she led the team at the half with 11 points. Norman scored six, Giotto scored five, it was a full team effort in the first half. Despite Negaunee’s offensive showing, the Mountaineers were right in the game, trailing by only four points.

2nd Half:

After a strong first half on the offensive end of the floor, the Miners continued to be efficient in the third quarter. Negaunee couldn’t be stopped, and Iron Mountain couldn’t keep up. Norman had a huge quarter for the Miners, leading the charge with nine points in the third. Nelson was hitting shots, Morgan Carlson chimed in, and Negaunee pulled away big. Norman knocked down a buzzer beating 3-pointer to end the quarter, extending the lead to 17 points.

End of 3rd: Negaunee Miners 52, Iron Mountain Mountaineers 35

Both teams went back and forth in the fourth quarter, the game was in hand at that point. Hill scored zero second half points, but it didn’t stop the Miners’ attack. Norman added four more points in the final quarter to boost her total to 19 points, tying Mongrain for the game-high in points. Hill finished with 11 points, Nelson with nine and Carlson with eight. After battling in the first half, the Miners found a way to get the upper hand and pick up a 62-48 road win over Iron Mountain. The Miners are now 13-4 on the season, and have a tough closing stretch with games against Gwinn, Westwood and Marquette.
