Negaunee, MI – February 4, 2020 – After trailing at the end of the first quarter, the Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball team took control of the game, and won 50-42 over the Gladstone Braves. Jesse Anderson was live from Lakeview Memorial Gymnasium with the call on Sunny 101.9.
1st Half:

The Braves were off to a hot start and took an early 6-0 lead over the Miners. Megan Crow was causing problems for the Negaunee defense, but that’s typical for most defenses as she is 6’3″. After a few minutes of struggles, Alyssa Hill got Negaunee on the board with a layup. After another basket by Crow, Lilly Nelson hit a 3-pointer for the Miners, cutting the deficit to 8-5. Gladstone had an answer with five consecutive points to take a 13-5 lead after a 3-point shot from Torie Zeise. Morgan Carlson scored inside to cut Gladstone’s lead, but the Braves remained in the lead 13-9 at the end of the first quarter.
End of 1st: Gladstone Braves 13, Negaunee Miners 9

After an off start to the game for the Miners, they responded in the second quarter. Nelson and Bree Giotto hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Miners a 17-13 lead, they started rolling offensively. Chloe Norman chipped in with two free throws for Negaunee, extending the lead to six points. Gladstone battled back to get the deficit down to four points right before the half. Gladstone owned most of the first quarter, and Negaunee owned most of the second quarter, resulting in a four-point game at halftime.
Halftime: Negaunee Miners 23, Gladstone Braves 19
2nd Half:

The Miners had a nice start to the second half, as they extended the lead to 27-19 after a bucket from Hill. After a basket by Gladstone, Giotto connected once again from 3-point range and gave Negaunee a 30-21 lead. Both teams began trading scores, and another Hill layup put Negaunee up by 11 with one minute left in the third quarter. Gladstone was running good offense, but it always seemed like the Miners had an answer on the other end. The Braves cut the deficit to nine points as the third quarter came to an end.
End of 3rd: Negaunee Miners 38, Gladstone Braves 29
Gladstone was content on staying in this game, but Nelson was trying to end it with a 3-pointer to put Negaunee up 41-31 with six minutes left. The Braves kept hanging around, but trailed 43-35 with under three minutes left. Zeise and Maddie Algren were producing offensively, but Gladstone was still down 47-38 in the final minutes. The Braves were running out of time, and all they could do was foul. Negaunee kept its lead around 9-10 points, and it was enough to get a home victory over the Braves. The Miners trailed early, but battled back for a 50-42 win. Hill led Negaunee with 16 points on the night.
