Negaunee Girls Basketball Comes Up Short against Westwood 45-35 on Sunny 101.9

West Ishpeming, MIJanuary 24, 2020 – After stringing off six straight wins, the Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball team lost on the road to the Westwood Patriots 45-35 to drop to 9-3 on the season. The Miners battled all night long, but a talented Westwood team made clutch shots when they needed them. Jesse Anderson had the call from Westwood High School on Sunny 101.9.

It didn’t take long for this game to have some fireworks, as Tessa Leece made a deep 3-pointer to give the Patriots a 4-0 lead after a free throw from Natalie Prophet. Bree Giotto got the Miners on the board with a bucket, and Westwood led 4-2 within the first few minutes. The Patriots scored four more points to take a six-point lead before Chloe Norman began to get it going for Negaunee with a made shot. Norman ended up with six points in the first quarter, but Westwood held an 11-8 advantage.

In the second quarter, Prophet was the major difference for the Patriots. She was hitting open shots and dominating the game, Negaunee didn’t have an answer. The Miners however cut it to a 15-13 after a Lilly Nelson 3-pointer, but Westwood went on another run with baskets from Prophet, Leece and Madelyn Koski. The Patriots got the lead up to double digits with a 25-14 lead, it was going to be tough sledding for Negaunee to get back into the game. However, Morgan Carlson made a big shot right before the end of the half to cut the deficit to nine points. Westwood led Negaunee 25-16 at halftime, Prophet led the way with 13 points.

2nd Half:

Negaunee’s offense picked up in the third quarter as Alyssa Hill began to feel it down low with a couple of baskets. The Patriots are good for a reason, and they proved it with an answer to each Negaunee run. The Miners decreased the deficit once again, and they got it down to 30-25 with three minutes left in the third quarter. Leece hit another 3-pointer to extend the lead back to eight points for Westwood, but Nelson answered right back for the Miners. At the end of three quarters, Westwood led Negaunee 33-28.

Emily Nelson made a big shot for the Patriots to begin the fourth quarter, and just like that, the lead was back up to seven. Westwood got an and-one on the next possession, and the lead was up to double digits once again. Negaunee kept battling back, and found themselves trailing 39-34 after a basket by Hill and free throws by Carlson. Prophet missed a shot on the other end, but after a clutch offensive rebound by Jillian Koski, Prophet made a dagger 3-point shot to give the Patriots an eight-point lead with under three minutes to go. Negaunee battled for most of the game, but they ran out of time. The Patriots had all of the answers, and they defeated the Miners 45-35. Prophet and Leece both paced Westwood with 16 points. Negaunee falls to 9-3 on the season, and they were led by Norman with 12 points.

NEXT GAME: The Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball team doesn’t have long to regroup, as they travel to Ishpeming to face the Hematites in a rivalry game on Monday, Jan. 27.
