Negaunee Girls Basketball Victorious 47-34 over Gwinn on Sunny 101.9

Negaunee, MIJanuary 21, 2020 – In a defensive battle, the Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball improved to 9-2 on the season after a 47-34 win over the Gwinn Modeltowners. Jesse Anderson had the call live from Negaunee’s Lakeview Memorial Gymnasium on Sunny 101.9.

1st Half:

The first quarter was a battle, and both teams started off slow. Negaunee led 3-0 for the first four minutes of the game, until Emily Curtice broke the drought for Gwinn with an and-one. Alyssa Hill was the focal point offensively for the Miners, but offense was hard to come by against the Modeltowners’ 2-3 zone. Negaunee didn’t shoot the ball well in the opening quarter, and Halle Beauchamp nailed a 3-pointer for Gwinn to keep it close. Negaunee led 10-8 after eight minutes of play in a slug-fest.

After a quarter to forget for the Miners, they responded in the second. Chloe Norman became a force on the fast break with back-to-back layups to extend the lead. Norman, Morgan Carlson and Larissa Anderson continued to do damage, and quickly the lead was up to double digits. Hill had four first quarter points and was held scoreless in the second, but it didn’t matter. The Miners led 20-12 at halftime after a late Gwinn basket, the defense was stingy from both squads.

2nd Half:

The offense picked up a bit for both sides, but it was tough to crack the code on these defenses. Hill started to get it going for Negaunee, but Gwinn wasn’t going away quietly with baskets from Curtice and Marissa Delmont. The Modeltowners couldn’t cut into the lead, and trailed Negaunee 32-20 at the end of the third quarter. Hill and Norman led the Miners with 11 points each.

Gwinn came out strong in the final quarter, led by a 3-pointer from Curtice, and a basket by Delmont. However, things got out of hand quickly has a double technical on Gwinn resulted in four made free throws for Negaunee. The Miners took a 43-29 lead, and while the clock ticked down, so did Gwinn’s chances. Both teams traded baskets in the final minutes, and Negaunee defeated Gwinn by a score of 47-34. The Miners are now 9-2 on the season after its sixth consecutive win. Norman led the game with 20 points, and Hill had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
