Negaunee Girls Basketball Leads Coast-to-Coast in 47-23 Victory Against Rival Ishpeming on Sunny 101.9

Negaunee, MIJanuary 7, 2020 – After starting off the new year strong with a victory over Calumet last week, the Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball team had another strong outing, topping the Ishpeming Hematites 47-23. The Miners are now 6-2 on the season, and were led in tonight’s contest by a double-double from Alyssa Hill, who finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

It didn’t take long for the Miners to start rolling, as Alyssa Hill made a layup on their first possession. That was the early spark that Negaunee needed, and they jumped out to a 10-0 lead over the Hematites with under three minutes left in the first quarter. Scoring from Morgan Carlson and Lilly Nelson contributed to the strong opening quarter for Negaunee. The Miners would add another basket to take a 12-0 lead and forced a shutout in the first quarter.

The Hematites came out swinging in the second quarter with a steal and a 3-pointer by Rylee Harris to get on the board. Negaunee didn’t take long to respond, as Hill scored in the post once again. The scoring began to go back and forth, but the math wasn’t in Ishpeming’s favor, as they trailed by double digits. The Miners went on another quick run, extending its lead to 22-8 with under one minute remaining in the first half. An offensive rebound led to another bucket for Hill, she paced the Miners in the first half with 10 points. Emma Poirier had an answer for Ishpeming right before the buzzer sounded, but the Hematites trailed Negaunee 24-10.

2nd Half:

It was a low-scoring third quarter for both squads, and for the second time in the game, the Hematites were held scoreless throughout an entire quarter. Chloe Norman had a bucket for the Miners to start things off, and her teammates Nelson and Carlson also scored to increase the big lead. After outscoring the Hematites 9-0 in the third quarter, the Miners led 33-10.

With a last gasp attempt, the Hematites came out of the timeout battling after a basket from Madisyn Mead. Harris and Poirier kept up the pace for Ishpeming in the final quarter, but it was too late to turn it on. The Miners were doing an impressive job of breaking the full court pressure from Ishpeming, countering it with multiple baskets from Hill and a 3-point shot by Larissa Anderson. Mead continued to do damage on offense for the Hematites, but the Miners still led by 24 with under two minutes left after a 3-pointer by Nelson. The subs came in for both teams, and the Miners walked away with an impressive 47-23 victory to improve to 6-2 on the season. Hill led the Miners and the game with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
