Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball falls to the Westwood Patriots 49-37 in District Play on Sunny 101.9FM

Ishpeming, MIMarch 4th, 2019 – The Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball team opened up postseason play on Monday night, when they traveled to Westwood to take on the Patriots in a District 66 first round match-up! Jesse Anderson had all of the action between the Miners and the Patriots on Sunny 101.9FM.

1st Half:

This game between two of the best in the U.P. started off as a defensive battle, and the Patriots led 3-0 early. Negaunee was struggling offensively, the Patriots were playing impressive defense. Westwood would extend their lead to 7-0, which forced a Negaunee timeout. The Miners responded out of the timeout, as they trailed 9-5 with three minutes remaining in the first quarter. Westwood went on another run however, as they boosted their lead back up to seven points. The Patriots were playing excellent on both ends, and the scoreboard in the first quarter reflected that. Westwood would make a shot just before the buzzer sounded, and they led Negaunee by a score of 18-9, to end the opening quarter of play.

End of 1st: Westwood Patriots 18, Negaunee Miners 9                

Westwood began the quarter strong with an and-one, their lead was up to 21-9. The Patriots were efficient from the free throw line, and they led 25-11 halfway through the second quarter. Negaunee cut Westwood’s lead to 26-16, they weren’t going to give up easily. The Miners definitely picked up the pace in the second quarter, but the Patriots had an answer each and every time. Westwood led Negaunee 28-18 going into the locker room, the Miners were going to have to step up their game to win this one.

2nd Half:

The Patriots came out of the locker room with a three-pointer, and their lead was now 13. The Miners would score to cut the lead to 11, but once again the Patriots had an answer. The score remained 33-22 in favor of Westwood for a few minutes, as both teams were struggling on offense. The teams went on to trade baskets on multiple occasions, and the Patriots led 37-26 with two minutes remaining in the third quarter. After a back-and-forth quarter, Westwood led 39-28 heading into the fourth quarter.

End of 3rd: Westwood Patriots 39, Negaunee Miners 28          

The Miners hit a free throw to cut the deficit to 10, then the teams went on a scoring drought for a few minutes once again. Negaunee cut Westwood’s lead to single digits for the first time in the second half, as they trailed 40-31 with under four minutes remaining in the game. This game was a defensive battle from the opening tip, as not many points were scored in this one. Both squads traded buckets, and the Patriots led 44-33 with under two minutes to go, this did not bode well for the Miners. Negaunee couldn’t get closer, and Westwood continued to make their free throws. The Patriots held the lead from start, and they didn’t look back. Westwood went coast-to-coast in an impressive performance, as they defeated the Negaunee Miners 49-37. This game would end the Miners’ season, as they finished with an impressive 16-5 record, a great accomplishment indeed.
