Negaunee, MI – February 23rd, 2019 – The Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball team was at home on Saturday night, as they hosted the Gwinn Modeltowners in a Marquette County clash! Jesse Anderson had the call from Lakeview Memorial Gymnasium in Negaunee on Sunny 101.9FM!
1st Half:
The Miners started off strong, as they led 2-0 early on. Gwinn tried to make things difficult for Negaunee early by changing defenses and bringing full court pressure. The Modeltowners knocked down a three-pointer, and they took their first lead of the game 5-2. This game hit a wall in the scoring column, as neither team could score for a few minutes. After a free throw and a lay-up, the Miners tied the score at 5 with two minutes remaining in the first quarter. Both teams traded baskets, and the score was tied 7-7 late in the opening quarter of play. After a hard fought first quarter, the Miners and Modeltowners were tied at 7 a piece.

End of 1st: Negaunee Miners 7, Gwinn Modeltowners 7
Gwinn continued to pester Negaunee with its zone defense, however the Miners strung a 5-0 run together to take a 12-7 lead. Negaunee began to pick it up on the offensive end, as they played with great ball movement. The Miners found themselves leading 19-7 with three minutes remaining in the first half, they were on a 12-0 run to begin the second quarter. Gwinn would score their first points of the second quarter with just over two minutes left in the quarter, but they trailed 23-9. The Miners played a great quarter of basketball, outscoring the Modeltowners 18-2. Negaunee led Gwinn at the half by a score of 25-9.

2nd Half:
Both teams came out in a zone defense to begin the second half, as perhaps the Miners wanted to keep Gwinn off the three-point line to keep their big lead. The Modeltowners would score the first four points of the second half, as they cut the deficit to only 12 points. Negaunee wouldn’t let it get any closer, as they extended their up to 30-13. Since the end of the first quarter when the game was tied, Negaunee really was dedicated to playing tremendous defense. After three quarters of play, the Miners led 34-16.

End of 3rd: Negaunee Miners 34, Gwinn Modeltowners 16
Negaunee would score the first four points of the fourth quarter, their lead was now up to 22 points. The Miners continued to score, as they led 41-17 with under six minutes remaining. The Modeltowners weren’t giving up easily however, as they cut Negaunee’s lead to 41-24. Gwinn tried to spark a comeback, but their deficit was too much to overcome. The clock ticked down, and after a hard fought first quarter, the Miners pulled away from Gwinn by a score of 45-29.
Final Score: Negaunee Miners 45, Gwinn Modeltowners 29
