Negaunee, MI – February 20th, 2019 – The Negaunee Miners Boys Basketball team hosted the Westwood Patriots in the last game of the regular season! Jesse Anderson had the call for all of the action between the Miners and the Patriots on Sunny 101.9FM!
The game started off slow, as the Patriots led 1-0 after the opening two minutes. The Miners got on the board with a three-pointer, as they led 3-1 early on. Neither team could get things going on offense, this game was going to be a rugged war throughout. With three minutes remaining in the first quarter, Negaunee led 8-6, the scoring had picked up a bit. Westwood went on a quick 5-0 run, and took an 11-8 lead. The teams began to trade baskets, and at the end of the first quarter, Westwood led Negaunee 13-11.

Both teams went back-and-forth to start the second quarter, as the Patriots led 15-13. Offense continued to be a virtue in this game, as the game was tied at 15 with five minutes to go in the first half. The Patriots picked it up once again, as they led 20-17 in a close one over the Miners. Both squads traded baskets, and Westwood led 23-20 with two minutes to go until halftime. Negaunee came charging back however, as they took the lead back 26-24. A late Patriots three-pointer gave them a 27-26 halftime lead over the Negaunee Miners.

Negaunee would start the second half scoring to take a 28-27 lead, this game has been a battle since tip-off. After a Negaunee bucket, Westwood went on a 6-0 run, and their lead was 33-30. The Patriots would capitalize on their second consecutive and-one, their lead was now up to six points. Another Westwood basket put them up 38-30, which forced a Negaunee timeout. The Miners weren’t going anywhere, as they quickly cut Westwood’s lead to 38-35 with two minutes remaining in the third quarter. This game was setting up for a great finish, as the Westwood Patriots led the Negaunee Miners 38-37 after three quarters of play.

The Miners took the lead back 39-38 after a pair of free throws with six minutes to go. This was quite the game, as it was close for all 32 minutes. Negaunee would get a huge and-one, as they took a four point lead. The Patriots came charging back once again however, as they took the lead right back, 44-42. A big hook-shot by Negaunee tied the game up at 44 with two minutes left, this one was going down to the wire. The Miners took a two point lead with a minute to go, defense was going to decide the result. Negaunee forced a big turnover, and cashed in with two free throws to take a four point lead. The Miners ended the game with great defense, as they survived a tough Westwood team for the 49-46 victory.
