Negaunee Miners Boys Basketball defeats the Ishpeming Hematites 56-48 on Sunny 101.9FM

Negaunee, MIFebruary 8th, 2019 – The Negaunee Miners Boys Basketball team was back at home on Friday night, as they hosted the rival Ishpeming Hematites! Jesse Anderson had the call from Negaunee on Sunny 101.9FM!

1st Half:

The Miners scored the first points of the game, but both teams began to trade baskets and Negaunee led 4-3. The game continued to go back-and-forth, this time Ishpeming grabbed a 7-6 lead with four minutes left in the first quarter. Negaunee scored four straight points to take a 10-7 lead, and both teams then hit a wall in the scoring column. Neither team would score for the last few minutes of the quarter, and the Miners led the Hematites 10-7 after the first.

Both teams traded three-pointers to open up the scoring in the second quarter, and the Miners led 13-10. Negaunee would make two more threes, and their lead was now up to nine points. The Miners were on fire now from deep, as two more three-pointers found Negaunee up 25-11. Both squads would continue to trade baskets, but this time the Miners had a good lead. The score stayed at 30-16 for a couple minutes to end the half, until Ishpeming made a buzzer beater to make the halftime score 30-18 in favor of the Negaunee Miners.

2nd Half:

The Hematites started off the third quarter exactly how they wanted to, as they cut the deficit in half to 30-24. Negaunee began to get in foul trouble, and that really hurt the Miners. Ishpeming would cut the lead to only four, but the Miners finally scored their first points of the quarter with only three minutes to go to take a 33-26 lead. The teams traded baskets once again, and the Miners led 36-30. The Hematites got themselves right back into the game, but Negaunee was responding every time. The teams remained scoreless for the last couple minutes of the third quarter, and the Miners led 39-31 heading into the fourth.

Ishpeming started off the scoring in the fourth quarter, but the Miners scored a basket of their own. This game was a battle, both teams were competing really hard. Negaunee led 41-37 with five minutes to go, this game was setting up to go down to the wire. The Miners would push the lead back up to seven points, but the Hematites weren’t going to back down. With under two minutes to go, the Hematites quickly went on a 5-0 run, and cut Negaunee’s lead to only two. The Miners hit a huge three-pointer to get the lead back up to five points with just over a minute to go. Both squads traded free throws, and Negaunee led 53-46, the game was all but over with under 30 seconds to play. Negaunee made clutch free throws down the stretch, and survived Ishpeming’s comeback. The Miners defeated their arch rival Hematites 56-48.
