West Ishpeming, MI – February 6th, 2019 – The Negaunee Miners Boys Basketball team went on the road tonight to battle the Westwood Patriots! Jesse Anderson had the call from Westwood High School on Sunny 101.9FM!
1st Half:
Negaunee had a good start to the game, as they took an early 4-0 lead over Westwood with six minutes to go in the quarter. Both teams played good defense to start, and the action was slow-paced as well. The Patriots would finally get on the board with under four minutes to go in the quarter, as they trailed 4-2. Both squads traded baskets, and the Miners had a 6-4 lead late in the first quarter. Negaunee would make a three-pointer with under 30 seconds in the opening quarter in response to a Westwood bucket. The Patriots would beat the buzzer however, and that basket made the score 9-8 in favor of Negaunee after one.
End of 1st: Negaunee Miners 9, Westwood Patriots 8
The Miners would strike first in the second, as they took a three point lead over Westwood. This game was a battle, and it always is when the Miners and Patriots play. Negaunee led 11-10 halfway through the quarter, great defense was being played by both squads. The Miners scored four consecutive points to take a 15-10 lead with under two minutes remaining in the first half. Westwood would make a three-pointer in the last minute of the half, but a late Miners free throw would make the score 16-13 in favor of Negaunee at the halftime break.
Halftime: Negaunee Miners 16, Westwood Patriots 13
2nd Half:
It was a slow start for both teams in the third quarter, as both teams were struggling to score to begin the second half. The Miners led 18-15 with less than six minutes to go in the third, every point was coveted in this match-up. Westwood continued to play scrappy defense, as they drew multiple charging fouls at this point in the game. Negaunee began to build momentum, as they led 26-18 with under two minutes left in the third quarter. The teams began to trade buckets, and the Miners led 29-22. Negaunee made a huge three-pointer to end the third, the Miners outscored Westwood 16-7 in the third quarter, and took a 32-22 advantage heading into the fourth.
End of 3rd: Negaunee Miners 32, Westwood Patriots 22
The Miners continued playing a zone defense, which they had been using for most of the second half. The defense was outstanding once again, as neither team could get going in the fourth quarter. The Miners would make two free throws to take a 37-26 lead with two minutes to go. Running out of time, Westwood was forced to bring full-court pressure and foul. The Patriots got the game back to single digits, as Negaunee led 38-29 with just over a minute to play. The Miners would pull away with free throws in the final minute, the deficit was too much for the Patriots. Negaunee held Westwood to only 32 points in quite a defensive showdown, as the Miners won a tough road test by 12 points.
Final Score: Negaunee Miners 44, Westwood Patriots 32
